Trying to convert a Kindle book to plain text format and don’t know how? This guide introduces 3 effective methods, including some helpful tricks for students and teachers who want to do some research or lessons by reformatting.
Method 1. Export Kindle handwriting to text on Kindle Scribe
Kindle scribe is a good and convenient device to write notes for our favorite kindle books. What’s better, it offers the capability to convert handwritten notes to text which makes it easier to export our thoughts on some kindle books.
Go to the Notebook tab.
Pick a downloaded notebook and select the More menu under the notebook’s thumbnail.
Select Share and choose one of these options:
Convert to text and quickly send [to your registered email].
Convert to text and email.
Copy/paste them from the shared .txt file to other formats or other platforms such as Onenote.
Pros
It saves a lot of time by just getting your thoughts down in handwritten notes, and doing the more mechanical edits with some word processor after converting to text.
Cons
This only works for Kindle Scribe owners.
Method 2. Extract the text from a Kindle book (on Kindle devices and apps)
Kindle apps and devices allow us to copy text from our Kindle books, it’s useful when we only want to copy one sentence instead of the whole book.
Here I take my Kindle for Mac app as an example.
I open one book via the app, and then click the book to open it. Next, select the texts I want to copy and choose “Copy” in the toolbar that appears.
Then I paste the texts to the Notes app on my Mac.
That’s easy, right?
Tips: You’ll see that Kindle has appended a citation to the end of my selection, including the book title, author, and page number.
Pros
It’s helpful if you only want to copy limited contents from your Kindle purchases.
Cons
Some books have restrictions on how much text(10%) you can copy.
The ability to copy text may be restricted in certain books due to digital rights management (DRM).
Method 3. Convert an entire kindle book to txt for re-editing (from DRMed into a non-DRM format)
If the nature of the text is disposable, like a short note or a piece of news that doesn’t need to be kept for a long time, I recommend you try the above 2 methods. Otherwise, if it is long and has retention value, you somehow need to go into this Kindle Converter and tweak each and every word.
Step 1. Download Kindle books to the computer via Kindle PC Mac app.
Use the Kindle for PC version 2.4.0 or Kindle for Mac version 1.40, then log in to download the Kindle book.
Step 2. Add Kindle books and convert Kindle to TXT.
Launch the iSummersoft Kindle Converter. It automatically syncs your downloaded Kindle books, you only need to click on “Refresh Library”, then drag books to the right column.
Now continue to click the inverted triangle icon and select “TXT”, then click the “Convert to TXT” button. The kindle to text conversion will start soon.
When the conversion completes, click the check mark icon to locate the converted text format files.
Now you’ve converted the entire book text from Kindle to a txt file, you can reformat it, transfer and enjoy it on your non-kindle apps (such as Moon+ Pro) on your phone, and you can even use text to speech to read any text document aloud(listen to the kindle book without a Kindle).
What’s better, if you were a university student or teacher, this tool is efficient in preparing a study or research report, because you can re-edit the kindle contents as what you think and insert the plain texts into your powerpoint or thesis.
Tips: As plain text will lose all of the images in your books, so if you would like to keep the original images or similar elements such as formulas, I highly recommend you convert kindle books to docx format or ePub format, not to text.
